Depicted together in various ways, the crescent moon and solar star has been used in various historical contexts worldwide.
Along the east African coast Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt - The Crescent moon in the upward position doubles as cattle horn iconography, both signifiers of divine feminine energy and life giving sustenance. Through the Aster (ዐስተር) talisman I wanted to re-enforce these symbols as current sites of indigenous votive worship, not relics of the past, ones that are rooted in the African pantheon that live on a continuum. In this collection I am also re-inforcing the body as a site of authority and knowledge transmission, theres so much memory encoded within thats unbeknownst to us and longing to be activated - My art is a conduit for this.

This Amulet is a rich and illustrious vessel of culture from Eritrea - the Land of The Sea , featuring both the portraits of a Tigrinya goddess adorning traditional braids and jewelry & a Beni-Amer warrior rocking a tiffa, arm amulet and a spear. Each side reads Sewit Sium & Eternal in both English and Ge’ez, the ancient semitic mother language of the Tigre, Tigrinya, Tigrayan and Amharic languages.
